Who is Marshall?
And why is Paddle Grand Prix supporting him?
Marshall has been a member of Mt. Baker Ski Patrol for the past 21 years. He started paddling around 9 years ago to keep himself busy during the off season. These two sports are truly his passions in life.
At the end of January, 2011, he started having difficulty walking and was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. GBS took away his ability to use his legs, arms and hands. He was in St. Francis nursing home for 3 ½ months. His condition declined for 4 months until mid-May.
At that time, things started turning around and he was able to come home. His improvement allowed him to be accepted into University of Washington Medical Centers in-patient rehabilitation center for a 15-day intense rehabilitation regiment. He is now walking with a walker and is improving every single day.
His attitude through this entire ordeal has been nothing short of inspirational.
It goes without saying that this ordeal has been financially stressful on Marshall and his family. It’s one thing to endure these tough economic times WITH one’s health. It’s another to be challenged from multiple directions at once.
So this year, Paddle Grand Prix is dedicating 100% of the proceeds to help offset Marshall’s medical and rehab expenses. The paddling community has already raised money through book sales and paddle raffles — and straight donations — and we want to help chip away at the mounting debt that these challenges have placed on the Seaman family.
How can you help? Just enter the Paddle Grand Prix, show up on race day, and THROW DOWN!!! Your entry fee and any money you spend on raffle tickets or auction items will go straight to Marshall and his family.
Thanks in advance! And Marshall, we wish you a FAST, FULL RECOVERY!!!
