Back in August, the Paddle Grand Prix kicked off the ‘Race for your Life’ point series.

If you raced the Grand Prix, do you know how you rank?

Because the rapidly-approaching Deception Pass Dash is Race #2 in the series, and it’s guaranteed to shift the standings – especially for racers who don’t show up!

A huge, HUGE thanks to all ***86*** racers and the army of volunteers who came out and threw down today at the Paddle Grand Prix! UN-real turn-out, un-real vibe from start to finish, and un-real Bellingham bluebird day to play in.

The entire event this year was intended to help raise funds for Marshall and Patty Seaman to help offset medical and living expenses while he battled a disease earlier this year. Well… the exact amount raised is still pending receipt of a few auction checks and such, but this incredible community raised more than $4500.00 for Marshall and Patty.

We’ll get results up in the next day or two (we’ve got a power outage in Sudden Valley; I drove into work to post this quick update.)

Meanwhile, if you shot any photos at the event today, please send them to me one way or another.

Thanks again, Everyone. Totally, totally AWESOME!

1st Point Series Race Results

15 – 20 knot winds and chop covered the Bay last night for the Paddle Grand Prix Point Series Race #1. 8 brave souls showed up to Stand Up and Throw Down! With the wind coming straight at us from the south, we began the race with a beach start. Racers lined up one foot in the water, one knee on the board ready to go. When the horn blasted, racers hopped to their knees and up to their feets with impressive grace! This group has been training! But, amongst them all, Kimo was off like a bolt of lightning. From the first plant of his paddle in the water, their was no slowing him down.

The rest of us fell into place behind him for the 3-mile out and back course. The course took us from Cornwall Beach, straight into the wind and waves for a bumpy and challenging first half. Our turn around took us directly under the catwalk of Taylor Dock for a sharp u-turn.

The stretch home gave us a bit of reward for our effort, linking mini rides back to the beach and the finish.

Pizza at Rudy’s was the perfect finish to a fun first race! Next Tuesday we will be back at Cornwall Beach for Race #2. We have Mount Baker Ski Passes and NW Paddle Surfers Hoodies on the line for Point Series Winners!!!!

PGP Point Series Race #1 starts this Tuesday!!!!

Don’t forget the Tuesday Night Point Series starts tomorrow, August 9th. Race begins at Cornwall Beach at 6PM sharp! The course will be just over 4 miles. You can see how the point scale works HERE. After 3-races the lowest score wins. Because the group is small, we will not have board divisions, just men’s and women’s.

Although this is a free, fun and informal event, PLEASE be safe! Bring leashes and PFD’s and look out for each other on the water! If anyone is coming just to watch, we could use an extra timer to help Brandon!

PGP joins Race For Your Life season series!!!

The Race for Your Life series is shaping up for 2011-12, and we’re very proud to announce that the 2nd Annual Paddle Grand Prix, at Boulevard Park in Bellingham, will be this season’s kick-off event! Race for Your Life is a multi-race, year-long series allowing competitors to accumulate points based on their finish rank within their own division. One man and one woman sit atop the standings at the end of the season, and Sherri Cassuto and Troy Husband walked off with the 2010-11 championship trophies and top prize money.

Each race in the Race For Your Life series publicize and support one cause. PGP this year will be raising funds for local paddler Marshall Seaman who was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome in January of 2011. You can read more about his battle with the condition that took away his ability to use his arms, legs and hands. It is a story of hope, as he is now home, talking about the day he can once again paddle.

Thank you series organizers Bill Walker, Troy Nishikawa and Ernie Wong for inviting Paddle Grand Prix to be a part of this awesome series!!!!
